‘Twas Bruce Timm’s birthday yesterday and the thought occurred that I’ve never drawn the animated Batman style Batman EVER. Like EVER ONCE IN MY LIFE. And that’s not due to a lack of fondness for it… I love Batman: The Animated Series! It just never really occurred to me to try to rip off do one of my homages to it. Then, I saw someone post the cover to Batman Adventures Holiday Special #1 and I had my target… Mr. Freeze… the tremendous redesign (helmed by Mike Mignola) and redefinition of the character that it touched all media versions going forward (except maybe the stinky Arnold Schwarzenegger version… oops)… it was irresistible to try my hand at. You know, my inclination was that I was going to need lots of template curves and clean lines… and there were… but I felt like I got a LOT closer to the original art when I took another pass at the inking and chunked it up a bit. Once I added the tones, I was pretty psyched. It was a real pleasure to draw in this style once I spotted the blacks and the picture really came into resolve. What say you?
